The Monsoon Description and Rama’s Counsel on Timing
अपि चातिपरिक्लिष्टं चिराद्दारैस्समागतम्।आत्मकार्यगरीयस्त्वाद्वक्तुं नेच्छामि वानरम्।।
api cātiparikliṣṭaṁ cirād dāraiḥ samāgatam | ātma-kārya-garīyastvād vaktuṁ necchāmi vānaram ||
况且那位猴王久经艰辛,历时良久方与诸妻重聚;而我等使命重大,我不愿此刻去对他说。
'Since Sugriva has gone through great difficulties and is reunited with his wives after a long time and since our task is great, I did not desire to speak to him now.
Dharma includes sensitivity to another’s circumstance and choosing the right time (kāla) to act. Rama restrains immediate speech, balancing urgency of duty with compassion and propriety.
Rama reflects on Sugriva’s recent relief—reunited with his wives after hardship—and decides not to press him immediately, even though Rama’s mission remains urgent.
Rama’s self-control and discernment (viveka): he weighs mission-priority against humane consideration and timing.
