The Slaying of Vali
अहं ह्याजौस्थितस्यास्य करिष्यामि यथेप्सितम्।वृक्षैर्मुष्टिप्रहारैश्च पीडितः प्रतियास्यति4.16.8।।
ahaṃ hy ājau sthitasyāsya kariṣyāmi yathepsitam |
vṛkṣair muṣṭiprahāraiś ca pīḍitaḥ pratiyāsyati ||4.16.8||
当他在战场上站到我面前时,我将随我所愿行事:被树木击打、被我拳头重击而受苦,他必将退却。
'When he faces me in the battlefield, I will hit him with trees and fists, and he will run back for life.
The verse reflects the warrior’s worldview where strength is used to enforce dominance; it implicitly raises the dharmic question of whether power is guided by justice or by personal will.
Vālī boasts to Tārā about how he will physically overpower Sugrīva if Sugrīva confronts him.
Valor and confidence in battle are foregrounded, though tinged with overconfidence.
