Bharata at Bharadvāja’s Hermitage
सुषुवे यममित्रघ्नं कौसल्यानऽन्दवर्धनम्।भ्रात्रा सह सभार्यो यश्चिरं प्रव्राजितो वनम्।।2.90.11।।नियुक्तः स्त्रीनियुक्तेन पित्रा योऽसौ महायशाः।वनवासी भवेतीह समाः किल चतुर्दश।।2.90.12।।कच्छिन्न तस्यापापस्य पापं कर्तुमिहेच्छसि।अकण्टकं भोक्तुमना राज्यं तस्यानुजस्य च।।2.90.13।।
kacchin na tasyāpāpasya pāpaṃ kartum ihēcchasi |
akaṇṭakaṃ bhoktum anā rājyaṃ tasyānujasya ca || 2.90.13 ||
你必不至于想对那无罪的罗摩及其幼弟行不义,只为无碍享受王国吧?
At these words, Bharata, eyes filled with tears of grief, replied to Bharadwaja in a stumbling voice:
Dharma here is non-injury and rightful succession: the kingdom must not be pursued through harm or adharma against the blameless heir and his brother.
Bharadvāja tests Bharata’s intentions, voicing the suspicion that Bharata might seek power by wronging Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
Bharata’s integrity is being examined; the verse sets the stage for his self-vindication and commitment to righteous conduct over ambition.
