Praise of Pilgrimage (Tīrtha) and Prelude to the Greatness of Prayāga
sūta uvāca | sādhu pṛṣṭaṃ mahābhāgāḥ prayāgaṃ prati suvratāḥ | haṃtāhaṃ tatpravakṣyāmi prayāgasyopavarṇanam
Sūta
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Type: tirtha
It serves as a transition: Sūta confirms the question is appropriate and announces a forthcoming detailed description (upavarṇana) of the sacred tīrtha Prayāga.
By introducing Prayāga as a subject worthy of inquiry by “suvratāḥ” (disciplined, virtuous listeners), it frames the tīrtha as spiritually significant and suitable for a māhātmya-style exposition.
It implies that sacred knowledge is best approached with restraint, vows, and sincerity—suggesting that tīrtha teachings are connected to disciplined conduct and reverent listening.
