Bhīṣma’s Counsel to Duryodhana on Dynastic Welfare
iti karṇavacaḥ śrutvā kuntī duḥkhāt pravepatī | uvāca putram āśliṣya karṇa dhairyād akampanam ||
The verse highlights the ethical tension between blood-relationship and chosen duty: Kuntī’s maternal bond and remorse surge forth, while Karṇa is characterized as unwavering in resolve. It frames the coming moral conflict—compassion and kinship confronting steadfast commitment and the consequences of past actions.
After Karṇa speaks (in the preceding context), Kuntī hears him and is shaken by grief. She embraces him as her son and begins to respond—an emotionally charged moment in the Udyoga Parva where Kuntī seeks to influence Karṇa before the great war.
