Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Collapse and Vyāsa’s Counsel
eṣa cārtho mahābāho pūrvam eva mayā śrutaḥ | kathito dharmarājasya rājasūye kratūttame ||
The verse underscores the weight of authoritative testimony: Vyāsa grounds the present discussion in prior hearing and earlier instruction given to Yudhiṣṭhira at a major royal rite, implying continuity of dharma-knowledge across time and contexts.
Vyāsa addresses a ‘mighty-armed’ listener and states that the point being discussed is not new—he had heard it earlier and had already conveyed it to Yudhiṣṭhira during the Rājasūya sacrifice, linking the current moment to an earlier episode.
