Chapter 57: Constant Royal Vigilance, Primacy of Protection, and Principles of Dismissal

The verse teaches a balanced dharmic character: be capable of firm action, practice generosity, master the mind, use resources in a fitting way, give and enjoy at the proper time, and maintain purity and integrity of conduct.
In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma after the war. Here he lists virtues and practical disciplines expected of an ideal person (especially a ruler/householder): decisiveness, charity, self-mastery, timely giving and enjoyment, and unwavering good conduct.
