The verse teaches that attentive listening to a sacred, Nārāyaṇa-centered account is itself a purifying discipline: it steadies the mind (samatā) and is praised as removing moral taint (pāpa), emphasizing devotion and receptivity as ethical-spiritual practice.
Śaunaka, speaking to the reciter, expresses the listeners’ response: having heard the story from the beginning, they feel inwardly cleansed and mentally composed, and they acknowledge the narrative’s sanctity because it is grounded in Nārāyaṇa and is said to free one from sin.
