Adhyātma–Adhibhūta–Adhidaivata Correspondences and the Triguṇa Lakṣaṇas (Śānti-parva 301)
सत्त्वस्य च गुणान् कृत्स्नान् रजसश्च गुणान् पुनः । गुणांश्न तमस: सर्वान् गुणान् बुद्धेश्न भारत
sattvasya ca guṇān kṛtsnān rajasaś ca guṇān punaḥ | guṇāṁś ca tamasaḥ sarvān guṇān buddheś ca bhārata bharatanandana dharmātmā rājā yudhiṣṭhira | parabrahma paramātmā sāttvika-rājasa-tāmasa-guṇān buddhi-mana-ākāśa-vāyu-teja-jala-pṛthivī-eteṣāṁ sarveṣāṁ sampūrṇa-guṇān anyeṣāṁ ca sarva-vastūnāṁ guṇān svaguṇaiḥ vyāpya sarveṣu kṣetrajñeṣu sthitaḥ prabho | yathā śiṣyo gurum anugacchati tathā mana indriyāṇi ca śubhāśubha-karmāṇi ca jīvātmānam anugacchanti | yadā jīvātmā indriyāṇi prakṛtiṁ ca vihāya gacchati tadā nārāyaṇa-svarūpaṁ avināśinaṁ paramātmānaṁ prāpnoti yo dvandva-rahitaḥ māyātītaś ca |
毗湿摩言:“噢婆罗多族之子,婆罗多族之欢喜——持法的王者由提施提罗啊,当知至上梵、至上我,以自身威力遍满萨埵、罗阇、怛摩三德之诸相;亦遍满智(buddhi)与意(manas),以及虚空、风、火、水、地之全德,乃至一切万有之德;故祂安住于一切‘田知者’(诸有情我)之中。主啊,正如弟子随师而行,心、诸根与善恶诸业亦随个我之后。个我离去之时,连同诸根与自然(prakṛti)亦皆舍离,便证得那不坏之至上我——本质为那罗延(Nārāyaṇa),超越二对,超越幻力(māyā)。”
भीष्म उवाच
The Supreme Self (Parabrahman/Paramātman, identified with Nārāyaṇa) pervades all qualities and elements and is present in all living selves; liberation is described as the jīva transcending mind, senses, and prakṛti, attaining the imperishable reality beyond dualities and māyā.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction section, Bhīṣma continues his philosophical counsel to King Yudhiṣṭhira, explaining how the guṇas and the psycho-physical apparatus relate to the self, and how the self’s departure culminates in realization of the supreme Nārāyaṇa.
