Śreyas-nirdeśa (Discerning the Superior Good): Nārada–Gālava Saṃvāda
पितोवाच अधीत्य वेदान् ब्रह्मचर्येषु पुत्र पुत्रानिच्छेत् पावनाय पितृणाम् । अग्नीनाधाय विधिवच्चेष्टयज्ञो वन॑ प्रविश्याथ मुनिर्बुभूषेत्
pitovāca adhītya vedān brahmacaryeṣu putra putrān icchet pāvanāya pitṝṇām | agnīn ādhāya vidhivac ceṣṭayajño vanaṁ praviśyātha munir bubhūṣet ||
父亲说道:“儿啊,先当住于梵行之学徒戒律中研习吠陀;继而为净化并拔济祖先,当入居家之道,愿求子嗣。依法安立圣火,当如仪行火供等所制之祭仪。既尽诸祭祀之责,便当入林居之期,愿以牟尼之行而住。”
भीष्म उवाच
It lays out the normative progression of āśrama-dharma: study the Vedas in brahmacarya, fulfill ancestral and social obligations through household life (including begetting sons and maintaining sacred fires), and then transition to vānaprastha with a sage-like mode of living.
In Bhīṣma’s discourse on dharma, a father instructs his son on the proper life-course for a twice-born man: education and discipline first, ritual and progeny in householdership, and finally withdrawal to the forest for contemplative living.
