Śreyas-nirdeśa (Discerning the Superior Good): Nārada–Gālava Saṃvāda
अनुषक्ता द्वयेनैते भावा: स्थावरजड्रमा: । मनुष्यके जन्म लेते ही उसका अन्त कर डालनेके लिये अन्तक (यमराज) उसके पीछे लग जाता है और बुढ़ापा भी देहधारीके पास आता ही है। समस्त चराचर पदार्थ इन दोनोंसे बँधे हुए हैं
anuṣaktā dvayenāite bhāvāḥ sthāvarajaṅgamāḥ | manuṣyake janma lete hī usakā anta kara ḍālne ke liye antaka (yamarāja) usake pīche laga jātā hai aura buṛhāpā bhī dehadhārīke pāsa ātā hī hai | samasta carācara padārtha ina donoṃse baṃdhe hue haiṃ |
毗湿摩说道:一切存在之相——无论不动或有动——都被两位同伴所系缚。人一出生,终结者安多迦(阎摩,死王)便紧随其后,要使生命归于终点;而衰老也必然逼近一切有身之众生。故此,整个世界——动与不动——都被这二者牢牢钳制。
भीष्म उवाच
That embodied existence is inseparably accompanied by two inevitabilities—death and old age—so one should cultivate sobriety, humility, and detachment, grounding one’s conduct in dharma rather than in pride of youth or permanence.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction to Yudhishthira, Bhishma emphasizes a universal truth: from the very moment of birth, death is already in pursuit, and aging inevitably arrives; this frames his broader ethical counsel about right living amid life’s transience.
