Royal Duty: Protection, Penal Policy, and the Hayagrīva Exemplum
सम्यग वेदान् प्राप्य शास्त्राण्यधीत्य सम्यग राज्यं पालयित्वा च राजा | चातुर्वर्ण्य स्थापयित्वा स्वधर्मे पूतात्मा वै मोदते देवलोके
samyag vedān prāpya śāstrāṇy adhītya samyag rājyaṁ pālayitvā ca rājā | cāturvarṇyaṁ sthāpayitvā svadharme pūtātmā vai modate devaloke ||
毗耶娑说:国王若能如法通达吠陀之知,勤学权威诸论,端正无私地治理国土,并使四姓(cāturvarṇya)各安其职、各守其本分;由此净化其内心者,便在天界欢喜。此颂将王道视为道德修持:学识、正政与护持达摩相合,成为积德与身后安乐之途。
व्यास उवाच
Right kingship is a synthesis of knowledge and conduct: the ruler should gain Vedic understanding, study śāstric guidance, govern justly, and uphold each group’s proper duties. Such governance purifies the ruler’s inner self and yields heavenly reward.
Vyāsa is instructing on rajadharma within Śānti Parva, describing the qualities and actions by which a king becomes spiritually purified and attains happiness in devaloka after fulfilling his responsibilities on earth.
