Ātma-saṃyama-dharma: One-pointedness of Mind and Senses (शुक–व्यास संवादः)

आश्रमादाश्रमेष्वेव शिष्यो वर्तेत कर्मणा । इस प्रकार शिष्य यथाशक्ति सेवा करके गुरुको प्रसन्न करे और उन्हें उपहार देकर उनकी अआज्ञासे ब्रह्मचर्य-आश्रमसे दूसरे आश्रमोंमें पदार्पण करे और वहाँ भी उन आश्रमोंके कर्तव्योंका पालन करता रहे ।।

āśramād āśrameṣv eva śiṣyo varteta karmaṇā | vedavrato'pavāsena caturthe cāyuṣo gate,

毗耶娑说:“从一个住期(āśrama)到另一个住期,弟子当以正行自持。尽其所能侍奉师长,使师长欢喜;继而在师长许可之下,并奉上礼物,从梵行期(brahmacarya)进入其余诸住期,在各住期中继续履行相应之责。当他遵守吠陀誓戒并行持如斋戒等律仪,而人生已过四分之一时,应向师长奉献应得的达克希那(dakṣiṇā,师资礼金),并依仪轨完成三摩阿伐尔塔那(samāvartana,毕业归家礼)。”

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches āśrama-dharma: a student should honor and serve the guru, complete study with Vedic discipline, and then—only with the teacher’s permission and after offering dakṣiṇā—transition properly to the next life-stage while continuing the duties of each āśrama.
