Mahābhārata 12.217

ā dehād apramādāc ca dehāntād vipramucyate | hetuyuktaḥ sadā sargo bhūtānāṁ pralayas tathā ||
毗湿摩说道:自受此身之时起,若能不放逸、常怀警觉,则至身终之际便得解脱。然诸有情若与系缚之因——无明——相应,则生起(出生)不断,坏灭(死亡)亦复不断。
भीष्म उवाच
Steady non-negligence (apramāda)—continuous mindful discipline throughout embodied life—leads to release at death; whereas ignorance as the root cause keeps beings revolving in repeated birth and death.
In Shanti Parva’s instruction on dharma and liberation, Bhishma continues advising Yudhishthira, contrasting the vigilant yogin who attains freedom at life’s end with ordinary beings bound to ignorance who undergo perpetual creation and dissolution.
