Niraya and the Supreme Station: A Metaphysical Re-reading
sumukhaḥ pavanaḥ svarge gandhaś ca surabhis tathā | kṣutpipāsā śramo nāsti na jarā na ca pāpakam ||
The verse highlights Svarga as a karmic reward-state characterized by the absence of bodily afflictions (hunger, thirst, fatigue, aging) and the non-experience of suffering that arises from sin—implying that ethical conduct and merit lead to refined, painless conditions, while sin leads to suffering elsewhere.
Bharadvāja is describing the qualities of heaven (Svarga) in didactic discourse within Śānti Parva, emphasizing its pleasant environment and the absence of common human hardships, as part of a broader teaching on dharma, karma, and the fruits of actions.
