Adhyāya 159 — Dāna–Dakṣiṇā, Āpaddharma Measures, and Prāyaścitta Classifications
भवन्त्येतानि कौरव्य लुब्धानामकृतात्मनाम् | जिसने अपने मन और इन्द्रियोंको काबूमें कर लिया है
bhavanty etāni kauravya lubdhānām akṛtātmanām |
毗湿摩说道:“库鲁族的后裔啊,这些过失生于贪婪而未能自胜之人。能摄持其心与诸根者,当连同迷妄一并降伏贪欲。库鲁族之欢悦啊,伪饰、恶意、诽谤、搬弄是非与嫉妒——这些缺陷,正是存在于那贪婪而不自制的人身上。”
भीष्म उवाच
Greed, when joined with delusion, becomes the root-condition for multiple moral vices. Therefore, the disciplined person—one who has mastered mind and senses—should overcome greed (lobha) along with delusion (moha), since hypocrisy, malice, slander, gossip, and envy cluster around uncontrolled greed.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction section, Bhīṣma continues advising Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and ethical governance. Here he characterizes the psychological profile of the greedy and unself-controlled, listing the typical faults that arise from such a disposition.
