Greed as the Root of Wrongdoing
na hāyajñā amuṁ lokaṁ prāpruvanti kathaṁcana | āpātān pratitiṣṭhanti pulindaśabarā iva ||
Bhīṣma teaches that moral failure can lead to loss of adhikāra (eligibility) for Vedic sacrifice, and that such exclusion is linked with an inferior post-mortem destiny—remaining in downward, hellish conditions rather than attaining higher worlds.
In Śānti Parva’s instructional setting, Bhīṣma is advising on dharma and its consequences. Here he warns that certain kṣatriyas, due to sinful acts, become unfit for yajña and therefore do not reach the auspicious ‘other world,’ being compared to groups traditionally portrayed as outside Vedic sacrificial participation.
