Sandhi–Vigraha in Āpada: The Mouse and the Cat (सन्धिविग्रहापदि—मूषकमार्जारसंवादः)
śasyaṃ ca nāpi hartavyaṃ sāravighnaṃ ca mā kṛthāḥ | pūjyante yatra devāś ca pitaro ’tithayas tathā ||
Even in tense or conflict-prone situations, one must uphold dharma by protecting common livelihood (crops), avoiding disruption of auspicious rites, and maintaining reverence for worship of gods, ancestors, and the duty of hospitality to guests.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on righteous conduct, Kāyavya lays down practical restraints: do not plunder agricultural produce and do not cause disturbances where religious and social duties—worship of devas and pitṛs and honoring of atithis—are being performed.
