शकुनि (हिरण्मय-पक्षी) उपदेशः — Vighasāśin and the Difficulty of Gārhasthya
एतद् विदुस्तपो विप्रा द्वन्द्ातीता विमत्सरा: । तस्माद् व्रतं मध्यमं तु लोकेषु तप उच्यते
etad vidus tapo viprā dvandvātītā vimatsarāḥ | tasmād vrataṁ madhyamaṁ tu lokeṣu tapa ucyate ||
超越一切对待、远离嫉妒的婆罗门知晓:唯此才是真正的苦行。是故,虽世间亦称持戒立誓(vrata)为“苦行”,然与更高的修持——内心平等安住与无私履行神圣职责——相比,不过属中等之品。
अजुन उवाच
True tapas is primarily inner: freedom from envy and transcendence of dualities. External vows may be called austerity, but they are secondary unless grounded in inner equanimity and purity of intent.
Arjuna articulates a doctrinal point within the Shanti Parva’s ethical instruction: he reports what wise Brahmins regard as genuine austerity, contrasting inner transformation with merely external observances.
