एतद्‌ विदुस्तपो विप्रा द्वन्द्ातीता विमत्सरा: । तस्माद्‌ व्रतं मध्यमं तु लोकेषु तप उच्यते

Transliteration

etad vidus tapo viprā dvandvātītā vimatsarāḥ | tasmād vrataṁ madhyamaṁ tu lokeṣu tapa ucyate ||

Translation

超越一切对待、远离嫉妒的婆罗门知晓：唯此才是真正的苦行。是故，虽世间亦称持戒立誓（vrata）为“苦行”，然与更高的修持——内心平等安住与无私履行神圣职责——相比，不过属中等之品。
