Balarāma’s Pilgrimage Context
ऋषिदृष्टेन विधिना समा बह्दी: समाहित: । भारत! संन्यासीके रूपमें वहाँ आये हुए महामुनि जैगीषव्यको देखकर देवल उनके प्रति अत्यन्त गौरव और महान् प्रेम प्रकट करते तथा यथाशक्ति शास्त्रीय विधिसे एकाग्रचित्त हो उनका पूजन (आदर-सत्कार) किया करते थे। बहुत वर्षोतक उन्होंने ऐसा ही किया ।।
ṛṣidṛṣṭena vidhinā samā bahvīḥ samāhitaḥ | bhārata! saṃnyāsike rūpeṇa tatra āgatam mahāmuniṃ jaigīṣavyaṃ dṛṣṭvā devalaḥ tasya prati atyantaṃ gauravaṃ mahān prema ca prakāśayan yathāśakti śāstrīya-vidhinā ekāgracitto bhūtvā tasya pūjanaṃ (ādara-satkāraṃ) karoti sma | bahūn varṣān tādṛśam eva cakāra || kadācit tasya nṛpate devalasya mahātmanaḥ
毗舍波耶那说道:遵循诸仙所见所传之仪轨,提婆罗心神安住——婆罗多啊——每当见到大牟尼阇耆湿婆耶以出家遁世者(saṃnyāsin)之相来到那里,便对他流露至深的敬仰与厚重的爱戴。他尽其所能,专心一意,依经典之法而供奉礼敬。多年之间,他始终如此。后来有一次,关于那位高德的提婆罗,大王啊……
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Dharma is shown through sustained, disciplined reverence: honoring the worthy (especially sages and renunciants) with focused mind, affection, and scripturally guided conduct, consistently over time and within one’s means.
Vaiśampāyana describes how Devala repeatedly and for many years welcomed and worshiped the great sage Jaigīṣavya, who appeared in the form of a renunciant; the verse then signals a forthcoming turning point with “on one occasion…”
