Educational Q&A

When one’s cause is rooted in adharma, defeat brings not only external loss but inner collapse: courage gives way to kaśmala (despair and confusion), and the leader’s resolve turns from duty to flight. The verse highlights the ethical and psychological consequences of unrighteous warfare and pride.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Duryodhana, seeing the Pāṇḍavas jubilant and hearing the fierce sound of their arrows, becomes grief-stricken and considers retreat. He is described as bereft of both troops and any mount/vehicle, emphasizing his isolation and the collapse of his support.
