Duryodhana’s Final Condition, Lamentation, and the Night’s Report
prajñācakṣuś ca durdharṣaḥ kāṃ gatiṃ pratipatsyate | yeṣāṃ sarve putrāḥ kuṭumbinaś ca bhrātaraś ca bandhavaś ca hatāḥ, te mātā gāndhārī ca prajñācakṣuḥ durjayo rājā dhṛtarāṣṭraś ca idānīṃ kāṃ daśāṃ prāpsyataḥ ||

The verse highlights the moral and psychological aftermath of adharma-driven conflict: even the powerful are reduced to uncertainty and suffering when kinship bonds are destroyed. It points to the ethical cost of war—grief, accountability, and the inescapable consequences of choices.
After the catastrophic losses of the Kuru war and the night massacre context of the Sauptika Parva, Sanjaya reflects on the devastated royal elders. He wonders what state Gandhari and the blind yet discerning King Dhritarashtra will now enter, with their sons and relatives slain.
