Kṛpa’s Counsel and Drauṇi’s Sleepless Resolve
idānīṁ yo 'yaṁ krodhaḥ samutpannaḥ, tam ahaṁ svayam api na śaknomi nivārayitum | asmin loke nāhaṁ kañcid api tādṛśaṁ puruṣaṁ paśyāmi yo māṁ krodhāt nivartayet || tathaiva niścitā buddhir eṣā sādhumatā mama | vārtikaiḥ kathyamānas tu mitrāṇāṁ me parābhavaḥ ||
The verse highlights how unchecked anger can overpower self-control and moral deliberation. Kṛpa admits that even personal effort cannot restrain his wrath, showing the ethical danger of letting krodha become the driver of action, especially in a war context where ‘right resolve’ can be confused with revenge.
In the Sauptika Parva’s aftermath of the Kurukṣetra war, Kṛpa speaks amid the surviving Kaurava camp’s turmoil. He confesses an uncontrollable surge of anger and a firm resolve, while the circulating reports (vārtā) of his allies’ defeat intensify his sense of grievance and push him toward retaliatory intent.
