अध्याय १ — न्यग्रोधवनोपवेशनम् तथा द्रौणिनिश्चयः
Night at the Banyan and Drauṇi’s Resolve
सुप्तौ प्राबोधयत् तौ तु मातुलं भोजमेव च । क्रूरतापूर्ण बुद्धिका आश्रय ले बारंबार उपर्युक्त निश्चय करके अभश्वत्थामाने सोये हुए अपने मामा कृपाचार्यको तथा भोजवंशी कृतवर्माको भी जगाया ।।
suptau prābodhayat tau tu mātulaṃ bhojam eva ca | krūratāpūrṇa-buddhikā āśrayaṃ lebhe bāraṃbāram uparyukta-niścayaṃ kṛtvā aśvatthāmāne soye hue apane māmā kṛpācārya-ko tathā bhojavaṃśī kṛtavarmā-ko bhī jagāyā || tato prabuddho mahātmānau kṛpa-bhojī mahā-balau ||
三阇耶说道:他心智为残忍所锻硬,又一再钉牢其决意,阿湿婆陀摩便唤醒了沉睡中的舅父克利波,以及婆阇族勇士克利多跋摩。二人被唤醒后——克利波与那位婆阇勇将——皆以大心大力起身,肃然应对。
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights how repeated, deliberate resolve rooted in cruelty leads one toward adharma. Even after the war’s end, choosing vengeance and mobilizing allies for a nocturnal act signals ethical collapse rather than righteous kṣatriya duty.
Aśvatthāmā, intent on a harsh course of action, awakens his companions—his maternal uncle Kṛpa and the Bhoja warrior Kṛtavarmā—bringing them into his plan that will unfold as the Sauptika (night) episode.
