Chapter 45
(धनंजयो महाराज दक्षिणं पक्षमास्थित: । भीमसेनो महाबाहुर्वामं पक्षमुपाश्रित: ।।
sañjaya uvāca |
dhanañjayo mahārāja dakṣiṇaṃ pakṣam āsthitaḥ |
bhīmaseno mahābāhur vāmaṃ pakṣam upāśritaḥ ||
sātyakir draupadeyāś ca svayaṃ rājā ca pāṇḍavaḥ |
vyūhasya pramukhe tasthuḥ svenānīkena saṃvṛtāḥ ||
svabalena arisainyaṃ tat pratyavasthāpya pāṇḍavaḥ |
pratyavyūhat puraskṛtya dhṛṣṭadyumnam śikhaṇḍinam ||
tat sādina-gaja-kalilaṃ padāti-ratha-saṅkulam |
dhṛṣṭadyumna-mukhaṃ vyūham aśobhat mahābalam ||
agnir nirveśanaraḥ pūrvo brahmeddhaḥ saptitāṃ gataḥ |
tasmād yaḥ prathamaṃ jātas taṃ devā brāhmaṇaṃ viduḥ ||
三阇耶说道:“大王啊,檀那ंज耶(阿周那)据守右翼,臂力无双的毗摩塞那扼守左翼。萨底耶吉、德劳帕蒂之子们,以及坚战王本人,皆在阵列最前,周遭为本军诸部所环护。随后,这位般度之子以己军遏止敌众,迫其停步;并以德里什塔丢摩那与施迦ṇḍin为先锋,布下对阵之阵。那强盛的战阵——骑兵与象军密布,步卒与战车拥塞,其前锋由德里什塔丢摩那统领——辉耀非常。 又有火神阿耆尼——古老者、宇宙之主,因梵天所燃、且最先自梵天之口诞生,故诸天尊之为‘婆罗门’——在吠陀真言的召请与护持之下,化作阿周那神圣战车的骏马。”
संजय उवाच
Even amid violent conflict, the narrative highlights disciplined order (vyūha), responsible leadership, and reliance on sanctioned means: the Pāṇḍavas act through coordinated deployment and restraint (checking the enemy rather than reckless charge), while the mention of Agni linked to Vedic mantras underscores the ideal that power should be aligned with sacred order and rightful conduct.
Sañjaya reports the Pāṇḍavas’ battlefield arrangement: Arjuna holds the right wing, Bhīma the left; Sātyaki, the Draupadeyas, and Yudhiṣṭhira stand at the front. Yudhiṣṭhira halts the enemy’s advance and forms a counter-formation with Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Śikhaṇḍin leading. The passage then adds a marvel: Agni, first-born from Brahmā’s mouth and honored as ‘brāhmaṇa’ among gods, serves as the horses of Arjuna’s divine chariot, empowered through Vedic mantra.
