Duryodhana’s Visit to Bhīṣma’s Camp and the Command Appeal
sañjaya uvāca |
ajānann arjunaś cāpi nihataṃ putram aurasam |
jaghāna samare śūrān rājñas tān bhīṣma-rakṣiṇaḥ ||
The verse highlights the moral and emotional complexity of dharma in war: a warrior may be steadfast in duty and yet remain ignorant of devastating personal losses, revealing how conflict obscures knowledge and multiplies suffering.
Sanjaya reports that Arjuna, not yet knowing that his own son Iravan had been killed, continued fighting and slaying the heroic kings who were positioned as protectors of Bhishma on the battlefield.
