Arjuna and Bhima’s pressure; escalation toward Bhishma

桑阇耶说道:“般度之子啊,若你唯有在勇士毗湿摩被杀之后才见胜利,那么今日我只凭一乘战车,也要诛杀那位俱卢族的祖父、年迈的毗湿摩(Pitāmaha)。”

The verse highlights the harsh ethical tension of dharma in war: victory is imagined as dependent on removing an invincible elder, and the speaker frames decisive action—‘even with a single chariot’—as a matter of resolve and kṣatriya duty, despite the moral weight of striking down a revered grandsire.
Sañjaya reports a forceful declaration addressed to a Pāṇḍava: if the Pāṇḍavas believe triumph requires Bhīṣma’s death, the speaker vows to kill Bhīṣma that very day, emphasizing personal determination and the centrality of Bhīṣma’s presence to the battle’s outcome.
