Adhyāya 90: Babhruvāhana’s Reception and the Commencement of Yudhiṣṭhira’s Aśvamedha
avai lupyāgamaṁ kṛtsnaṁ vividhair yajñiyaiḥ kṛtam | yathāgamaṁ yathānyāyaṁ kartavyaṁ ca tathā kṛtam ||
The verse emphasizes that religious action must be governed by both śāstric authority (āgama) and ethical-legal propriety (nyāya). A rite is considered truly complete not merely by external performance, but by faithful adherence to prescribed rules and by doing every required duty in a just and fitting manner.
The narrator Vaiśaṃpāyana reports that the sacrifice has been carried out to completion with all necessary sacrificial materials, and that the performers have not deviated from the scriptural procedure. He underscores that all obligatory acts connected with the rite were executed properly and justly.
