Marutta’s Sacrifice: Indra’s Threat, Saṃvarta’s Mantric Restraint, and Divine Reconciliation (अध्याय १०)

Marutta uvāca—śivena māṃ paśya, namaḥ te ’stu; prāpto yajñaḥ saphalo jīvitaṃ me. Ayaṃ yajñaṃ kurute me surendra, bṛhaspater avarajo vipramukhyaḥ.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights reverence toward divine and priestly authority: a ritual becomes truly ‘fruitful’ when performed in dharmic order—honoring Indra as the divine witness and acknowledging the qualified Brahmin (Saṃvarta) who conducts the sacrifice.

King Marutta welcomes Indra, offers salutations, and declares that Indra’s presence has made his sacrifice and life successful. He then identifies the officiating priest as Saṃvarta, the younger brother of Bṛhaspati, emphasizing the priest’s eminent status.
