The verse foregrounds dharma as compassionate permission: recognizing the unbearable grief of elders who have lost their sons, the community/authority should allow a dignified withdrawal to the forest, while also honoring the ethics of refuge (śaraṇa) and protection.
Vaiśampāyana narrates a request that leave be granted for two aged persons—devastated by the death of their sons—to depart for the forest. The speakers frame the request with blessings (bhadram) and by placing themselves under the listeners’ protection (śaraṇa).
