Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Public Request for Consent to Enter the Forest (अनुज्ञा-प्रार्थना)

śatadeye daśaśataṃ sahasne cāyutaṃ tathā | dīyate vacanād rājñaḥ kuntīputrasya dhīmataḥ ||

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights dāna as a lived form of dharma: a righteous ruler does not merely fulfill obligations minimally but gives with an expansive, compassionate intent, turning prescribed amounts into greater gifts.

Vaiśampāyana describes how, under Yudhiṣṭhira’s order, distributions were made on an amplified scale—hundreds became thousands, and thousands became ten-thousands—indicating an organized act of royal generosity.
