The verse foregrounds ethical speech: even a mighty hero like Arjuna approaches a charged situation by first showing humility and by responding after discerning another’s intention, suggesting that right counsel begins with restraint, respect, and understanding.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that Arjuna, recognizing Bhīma’s underlying intent, slightly bows and then addresses the ‘best of men’ with humility, introducing the speech that follows in the next verses.
