Śrāddha-utpatti and Nivāpa–Agni Precedence (श्राद्धोत्पत्तिः—निवापेऽग्निपूर्वकत्वम्)
phalgunīṣu dadacchrāddhaṃ subhagaḥ śrāddhado bhavet | apatyabhāgunuttarāsu hastena phalabhāg bhavet ||
The verse teaches that performing śrāddha with attention to auspicious timing (specific nakṣatras) is a dharmic act believed to yield distinct benefits—good fortune, progeny, and attainment of desired results—thereby encouraging disciplined, intentional observance of ancestral duties.
In the Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma. Here he specifies the fruits associated with offering śrāddha during particular lunar mansions (Phalgunī, Uttara-Phalgunī, and Hasta), as part of broader guidance on rites for ancestors and their ethical-religious significance.
