Gifts and Their Stated Results: Footwear, Sesame, Land, Cows, and Food
नाभूमिपतिना भूमिरधिष्ठेया कथंचन । नचापात्रेण वा ग्राह्मा दत्तदाने न चाचरेत्
Bhīṣma uvāca: na bhūmipatinā bhūmir adhiṣṭheyā kathaṃcana | na cāpātreṇa vā grāhyā dattadāne na cācaret | akṣayaṃ ca bhaved dattaṃ pitṛbhyaḥ tan na saṃśayaḥ | tasmāc chrāddheṣv idaṃ vidvān bhuñjataḥ śrāvayed dvijān ||
毗湿摩说道:凡非某块土地之合法主人者,绝不可用任何方式占有其地。受者若不相称,亦不应接受所赠之地;而土地既已布施,便不应再收回自用。为祖灵(Pitṛ,先祖)而施之供养,其功德不坏不灭——对此毫无疑问。因此,在施行 śrāddha(祭祖追荐)之仪时,智者应令诸位二次生者(dvija,婆罗门祭司)诵宣此理,以昭其法。
भीष्म उवाच
Respect rightful ownership and the sanctity of gifts: do not seize land without legitimate title, do not accept land if one is unqualified, and do not reclaim or use land once it has been donated—especially when given in connection with ancestral rites, whose merit is said to be imperishable.
In Bhishma’s instruction on dharma (Anuśāsana Parva), he lays down rules governing land and gifting, linking proper conduct in donations—particularly those connected with śrāddha—to enduring benefit for the ancestors and to social-legal order.
