Adhyāya 39 — Yudhiṣṭhira’s inquiry on attachment (saṅga) and relational restraint
शक्रो हाज्ञातरूपेण जटी भूत्वा रजोगुण: । विरूपं रथमास्थाय प्रश्न॑ पप्रच्छ शम्बरम्,एक समयकी बात है, देवराज इन्द्र अज्ञातरूपसे रजोगुणसम्पन्न जटाधारी तपस्वी बनकर एक बेडौल रथपर सवार हो शम्बरासुरके पास गये। वहाँ पहुँचकर उन्होंने उससे पूछा
śakro ha ajñāta-rūpeṇa jaṭī bhūtvā rajo-guṇaḥ | virūpaṃ ratham āsthāya praśnaṃ papraccha śambaram ||
毗湿摩说道：曾有一次，释迦（因陀罗）化作无人识破的伪装，成了结发苦行者，带着“罗阇斯”（rajas）的气质；他乘上一辆形貌粗陋的战车，前往阿修罗商婆罗处。及至相见，便提出一问——由此展开的，是对见识与行持的考验，而非以武力逞强。
