Śiva-stavarāja: Upamanyu’s Preface and Initiation of the Śarva-Nāma Enumeration
Anuśāsana-parva 17
kṛṣṇavarṇaḥ suvarṇaśva indriyaṁ sarvadehinām | mahāpādo mahāhasto mahākāyo mahāyaśāḥ ||
The verse presents the deity (under Viṣṇu-like epithets) as both transcendent and immanent: not only mighty and cosmic in form, but also present within all beings as the very power of the senses. Ethically, it supports reverence for the divine as the inner regulator of embodied life, encouraging humility and disciplined conduct.
Vāyu is speaking in praise, listing identifying marks and greatness of the divine figure—dark-hued, associated with golden steeds, vast-striding (Trivikrama-like), mighty-armed, cosmic-bodied, and renowned—framing the subject as worthy of worship and contemplation.
