tasmād dadyān na yāceta pūjayed dhārmikān api | subhāṣī priyakṛc chāntaḥ sarvasattvā-vihiṃsakaḥ ||
Bhīṣma outlines an ethical ideal: be a giver rather than a beggar, revere the righteous, speak kindly and truthfully, work for others’ welfare, maintain inner calm, and practice non-violence toward all beings.
In Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma—lying on the bed of arrows—continues instructing Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma. This verse is part of his practical guidance on daily conduct and moral discipline.
