yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ye ca dharmam asūyante ye cainaṃ paryupāsate | bravītu me bhavān etat kva te gacchanti tādṛśāḥ ||
The verse frames a moral contrast: contempt for dharma versus devoted practice of dharma, and asks about their respective posthumous outcomes—implying that ethical orientation and reverence toward dharma shape one’s destiny.
In the Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction setting, Yudhiṣṭhira respectfully questions the elder (Bhīṣma, addressed as ‘Grandsire’) about the fate of two types of people—those who denounce dharma and those who uphold it—seeking authoritative guidance on moral consequences.
