(Praise of Abstention from Meat) / Ethics of Ahiṃsā in Diet and Rite
Bṛhaspatir uvāca: kṛtvā pāpāni karmāṇi adharmavaśam āgataḥ | manasā viparītena nirayaṁ pratipadyate ||
Sinful action strengthens adharma’s hold; once the mind becomes oriented against dharma, the person naturally proceeds toward painful karmic results, described here as falling into niraya (hell).
In the Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction on conduct, Bṛhaspati speaks as a moral authority, explaining to the listener (in this dialogue context) how wrongdoing reshapes the mind and leads to severe consequences.
