Praise of the ‘Mental Tīrtha’ and the Marks of Purity
divyo divyena vapuṣā bhrājamāna ivāmaraḥ | vasūnāṃ marutāṃ caiva sādhyānām aśvinoḥ tathā
The verse underscores how extraordinary virtue or spiritual power is traditionally expressed as ‘divine radiance’: a person’s inner excellence is portrayed as outward splendor, comparable to revered classes of gods. It reinforces the ethical idea that dharmic stature is recognizable through conduct and presence.
Bhīṣma is describing someone’s appearance as superhumanly luminous—‘like an immortal’—and compares that brilliance to well-known celestial groups (Vasus, Maruts, Sādhyas, Aśvins), heightening the sense of awe and sanctity around the figure being described.
