Duḥṣanta–Śakuntalā: Gandharva Marriage and Succession Condition
रोचमान इति ख्यात:ः पृथिव्यां सो5भवन्नूष: । सूक्ष्मस्तु मतिमान् राजन् कीर्तिमान् यः प्रकीर्तित:
vaiśampāyana uvāca |
rocamāna iti khyātaḥ pṛthivyāṃ so 'bhavannūṣaḥ |
sūkṣmas tu matimān rājan kīrtimān yaḥ prakīrtitaḥ |
毗舍波耶那说道:“那位强者在大地上成为名为罗遮摩那(Rocamāna)的国王。又,王啊,被称作苏克什摩(Sūkṣma)的底提耶——以聪慧与声名著称——也在此投生为人间君主。”在这一段中,叙述者继续揭示谱系所含的伦理警策:由严酷或可怖之业所驱动的力量,可能在人间以王者之身再现;故世俗王权或许掩藏着更古老、非人的冲动。因此,评断君王及其作为时,明辨之智(mati)与自制尤为关键。
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The passage reinforces that outward status (a king’s birth and fame) may mask deeper inherited tendencies; hence rulers should be evaluated by conduct and restraint, not merely by name, power, or reputation.
Vaiśampāyana continues listing beings of Daitya/Asura origin who take birth among humans as kings, identifying Rocamāna and then noting that the famed Daitya Sūkṣma likewise becomes a human ruler.
