Vāraṇāvata-vivāsana-nīti: Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Duryodhana’s Policy Dialogue
द्रोणाय वेदविदुषे भारद्वाजाय धीमते । पाण्डवान् कौरवांश्वैव ददौ शिष्यान् नरर्षभ
vaiśampāyana uvāca |
droṇāya vedaviduṣe bhāradvājāya dhīmate |
pāṇḍavān kauravāṃś caiva dadau śiṣyān nararṣabha ||
毗湿摩便将般度诸子与俱卢诸子一并托付为弟子于德罗纳——婆罗堕阇之子,通晓吠陀而具慧明者——使诸王子在兵器之学上受训而臻更高之卓越。
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Those who will wield power must be placed under truly qualified guidance. Bhīṣma’s choice of Droṇa highlights responsible leadership: selecting a teacher who combines learning (Veda-knowledge), discernment, and practical competence, so that strength is shaped by discipline and aligned with dharma.
After the princes’ initial education, Bhīṣma seeks advanced instruction in arms and appoints Droṇa as ācārya. He formally entrusts both the Pāṇḍavas and the Kauravas to Droṇa as his pupils for higher training.
