Vāraṇāvata-vivāsana-nīti: Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Duryodhana’s Policy Dialogue
इष्वस्त्रज्ञान् पर्यपृच्छदाचार्यान् वीर्यसम्मतान् | नाल््पधीर्ना महाभागस्तथा नानास्त्रकोविद:
iṣv-astrajñān paryapṛcchad ācāryān vīrya-sammatān | nālpa-dhīr nā mahābhāgas tathā nānāsra-kovidaḥ ||
毗湿摩便探询寻访精通弓术与兵器之学的师长——以勇力著称、为世所敬者。因为他思量:才智浅薄、福分不厚、名望不显,又不通诸般武器之术者,绝不能妥善教导这些强盛的俱卢诸王子(及诸王孙)。于是他所求不止于寻常授业,而是要得一位足以以严整之学锻造其威力的宗师。
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Positions of instruction and authority should be given based on proven qualification—intellect, mastery, and recognized excellence—because the power of warriors must be shaped by disciplined knowledge, not by inadequacy.
Bhīṣma, intent on elevating the princes’ martial competence, seeks out renowned teachers of archery and weapon-science, judging that only a truly capable master can train such powerful heirs.
