Humility, Surrender, and the Power of the Name
lakṣmyāścaiva jñānavairāgyabhakti hyatyalpamaddhā mayi sarvadaiva / tava prasādādasti jagannivāsa tatra svāmitvaṃ nāsti viṣṇo sadaiva
Garuda (Vinata-putra), addressing Lord Vishnu
Concept: Grace-centered surrender: even if one’s bhakti/jñāna/vairāgya is small, refuge in Viṣṇu is secured by prasāda; true surrender is marked by absence of ‘mine-ness’ (svāmitva/ownership).
Vedantic Theme: Prapatti and amamatā as a doorway to liberation; īśvara-anugraha as decisive; renunciation of kartṛtva/mamatā.
Application: Practice ‘not-mine’ discipline: offer actions and outcomes to Viṣṇu, reduce possessiveness, and cultivate gratitude rather than entitlement.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: karuna
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: repeated emphasis on Viṣṇu-bhakti as refuge and on ego/ownership as bondage
The verse prioritizes Viṣṇu’s grace as the decisive support for refuge and spiritual progress, even when one’s knowledge, renunciation, and devotion feel insufficient.
It frames liberation-oriented living as dependence on Viṣṇu as the universal refuge, emphasizing surrender and the dropping of possessiveness—key inner conditions for crossing fear and bondage described elsewhere in the Purāṇa.
Cultivate humility in practice: do your sādhana, but consciously release possessiveness (“mine-ness”) and rely on devotion and prayerful surrender rather than spiritual pride.
