Naraka-varṇana: The Hellish Planets and the Karmic Logic of Punishment
श्रुत्वा स्थूलं तथा सूक्ष्मं रूपं भगवतो यति: । स्थूले निर्जितमात्मानं शनै: सूक्ष्मं धिया नयेदिति ॥ ३९ ॥
śrutvā sthūlaṁ tathā sūkṣmaṁ rūpaṁ bhagavato yatiḥ sthūle nirjitam ātmānaṁ śanaiḥ sūkṣmaṁ dhiyā nayed iti
听闻至尊之粗大形相与微妙形相之后,求解脱的行者(yati)应先以观想毗罗吒巨身而制伏其心,继而以智慧渐渐引心趋向那微妙的灵性形体。如此,心安住于三摩地;并以奉爱之行,得证主之“常-知-乐”之身(sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha)。
It is said, mahat-sevāṁ dvāram āhur vimukteḥ: if one wants to progress on the path of liberation, he should associate with mahātmās, or liberated devotees, because in such association there is a full chance for hearing, describing and chanting about the name, form, qualities and paraphernalia of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, all of which are described in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. On the path of bondage, one eternally undergoes the repetition of birth and death. One who desires liberation from such bondage should join the International Society for Krishna Consciousness and thus take advantage of the opportunity to hear Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam from devotees and also explain it to propagate Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
This verse advises a gradual method: begin by fixing the mind on the Lord’s manifest (gross) form, and after gaining steadiness, lead the mind—through purified intelligence—toward subtle realization.
Because the mind becomes stable more easily when anchored to the Lord’s perceivable form; once steadiness is achieved, one can progress to subtler contemplation without falling into distraction or mere abstraction.
Start with tangible devotional practices (darśana, deity meditation, chanting with form-visualization), build consistency, and then deepen into quieter, more subtle remembrance and discernment as concentration matures.
