Rahūgaṇa Meets Jaḍa Bharata: The Shaking Palanquin and the Teaching Beyond Body-Identity

स्थाल्यग्नितापात्पयसोऽभिताप- स्तत्तापतस्तण्डुलगर्भरन्धि: । देहेन्द्रियास्वाशयसन्निकर्षात् तत्संसृति: पुरुषस्यानुरोधात् ॥ २२ ॥

罗呼伽那王说道:“尊者,你说肥瘦等名相不属灵我,这话并不周全;因为乐与苦确由个体灵魂(jīva)所感受。譬如锅置火上,先热牛乳,继而其热透入,使米亦随之而热;同样,由于身受苦乐,诸根、心意与内在意识皆受影响。因依附于身,轮回之流仍随逐于人(puruṣa)。”

This argument put forward by Mahārāja Rahūgaṇa is correct from the practical point of view, but it arises from an attachment to the bodily conception. It can be said that a person sitting in his car is certainly different from his car, but if there is damage to the car, the owner of the car, being overly attached to the car, feels pain. Actually, the damage done to the car has nothing to do with the car’s proprietor, but because the proprietor has identified himself with the interest of the car, he feels pleasure and pain connected with it. This conditional state can be avoided if attachment is withdrawn from the car. Then the proprietor would not feel pleasure or pain if the car is damaged or whatever. Similarly, the soul has nothing to do with the body and the senses, but due to ignorance, he identifies himself with the body, and he feels pleasure and pain due to bodily pleasure and pain.

This verse explains that when the soul, out of attachment, identifies with the body and senses and stays in contact with deep inner desires (āśaya), it produces continued material wandering (saṁsṛti), like heat passing from fire to milk to rice.

While describing Bharata Mahārāja’s conduct and inner realization, Śukadeva uses a simple household analogy to show how subtle desire and bodily identification transmit bondage and keep the living being entangled in repeated birth and death.

Reduce identification with impulses and habits by observing desires without feeding them, and strengthen devotional practice so the mind’s “āśaya” shifts from sense enjoyment to remembrance of the Lord—thereby weakening the chain that drives repeated suffering.
