Description of the Power/Effects of Śiva’s Māyā
Sanatkumara (narrating to Vyasa)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Sthala Purana: Not a site-specific narration; the verse concludes a doctrinal exposition on Śiva’s māyā-śakti and its effects (māyā-prabhāva) as part of the Umāsaṃhitā teaching cycle.
Significance: Frames pilgrimage and worship as meaningful when paired with right knowledge: recognizing māyā as the binding/veiling principle under Śiva’s lordship, and seeking His anugraha to transcend it.
Role: teaching
It concludes a teaching that Śiva, as Pati (the Lord), governs Māyā; recognizing Māyā’s operation and turning toward Śiva’s grace is implied as the doorway to liberation.
By highlighting Śaṅkara’s sovereign power over Māyā, it supports Saguna worship (Liṅga/Śiva with attributes) as an accessible focus through which the devotee is led beyond delusion toward the Supreme.
A practical takeaway is steady japa of the Pañcākṣarī mantra (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) with devotion, as a Shaiva means to pierce Māyā and rest the mind in Śiva.
