Description of Shiva’s Ardhanārī-nara Manifestation
Suta Goswami (narrating the Purāṇic account; the verse describes Brahmā’s state)
Tattva Level: pashu
Cosmic Event: Cosmogonic impasse: created beings fail to proliferate, prompting the creator’s distress.
It shows that creation and governance by the limited creator-principle (Brahmā as vedhas) can fall into imbalance; in Shaiva Siddhanta, true flourishing arises when Pati (Śiva) bestows grace and restores order beyond mere material causation.
Brahmā’s distress implies insufficiency of autonomous creation; worship of the Śiva-liṅga (Saguna Shiva as the accessible form of the Supreme) is presented in the Purāṇic flow as the means by which cosmic stagnation is remedied through Śiva’s anugraha (grace).
A practical takeaway is to counter anxiety with Śiva-upāsanā—japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and simple liṅga-pūjā with devotion—seeking Śiva’s stabilizing grace when efforts alone do not yield growth.
