Pre-battle Portents
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Rudra
Role: teaching
It portrays the Lord as the inner governor who “holds the reins” of the senses and prāṇa, establishing right direction for the devotee (pashu) under Pati’s guidance—an image aligned with Shaiva Siddhanta emphasis on grace (anugraha) that steadies and leads.
Though the verse is narrative, it supports Saguna-upāsanā: Shiva (or the Lordly power aligned with Shiva’s will) is envisioned as an active protector and guide. Such concrete divine action strengthens devotional contemplation that culminates in reverence to the Linga as the stable center of refuge.
Meditate on Shiva as the “reins-holder” (indriya-nigrahakartā): before japa, mentally offer your mind and senses into his control and repeat the Panchākṣarī—“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—seeking steadiness and right guidance.
