शिवशङ्खचूडयुद्धवर्णनम् / Description of the Battle between Śiva and Śaṅkhacūḍa
वीरभद्रोऽपरान्धीमान्बहून् क्रोधादनाशयत् । नन्दीश्वरो जघानान्यान्बहूनमरमर्दकान्
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Vīrabhadra
It portrays Śiva’s protective power acting through His gaṇas: Vīrabhadra and Nandīśvara become instruments of dharma, removing forces that oppress the devas—symbolically, the destruction of egoic and adharmic tendencies that obstruct the soul’s return to Pati (Śiva).
The verse highlights Saguna Śiva—Śiva with attributes—who safeguards cosmic order through His attendants. For the devotee, Linga-worship connects one to this same Lord whose grace protects and purifies, while His gaṇas represent the active, manifest power of His will.
A practical takeaway is steady japa of the Pañcākṣarī mantra (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) to subdue inner ‘battle’ (krodha and agitation), along with Tripuṇḍra-bhasma remembrance of Śiva as the purifier who burns impurities and restores dharmic clarity.
